UK & Ireland Whistle Classifier
This folder contains a Random Forest whistle classifier for commonly occurring delphinid species in UK and Irish waters. These classifiers were trained with data collected using towed hydrophone arrays during combined visual and acoustic surveys around the UK and Ireland. Only recordings of single species groups that had visual confirmation of species identity and were at least 4 nmi from any other species were included in the training dataset. 7 different species categorised into 5 distinct classes are included in the classifier files:
- Delphinus delphis (Dde)
- Grampus griseus (LD*)
- Globicephala melas (LD*)
- Lagenorhynchus acutus (Lac)
- Lagenorhynchus albirostris (Lal)
- Orcinus orca (LD*)
- Tursiops truncatus (Ttr)
* due to whistle similarity and data deficiency, the three largest species (Risso's dolphins, long-finned pilot whales and killer whales) were grouped into a species category referred to as 'large delphinids' (LD)
